Urban developmentalism
Jamie Doucette and Bae-Gyoon Park, eds., Developmentalist Cities? Interrogating Urban Developmentalism in East Asia (Brill, 2019).
This might be a strange book to recommend to a general reading public, but I’ll go ahead and do it anyways. I’m writing an article on urban developmentalism and I’ve been reading everything I can get my hands on. I came across this one through a random google scholar search, and haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Economic growth doesn’t happen in air, of course. Any urban researcher worth their chops knows to take urban space seriously. And development transforms how cities look, feel, function.
I esp. recommend Hyun Bang Shin and Soo-Hyun Kim’s chapter on displacement in gentrifying Seoul.
